Buka Bersama 2019

it's not where you do it, but who are you with. I thank everyone who has been good friends and family without judgements. I love you all, hope we can do more of this in the next years.

Lebaran This Year...

...is pretty much like any other Lebarans last years.

Sholat Ied in the masjid. Shaking hand, forgiving each other. Visiting families here and there. Tired yet fun.

This year is a little less perfect, three siblings of mine spent the Lebaran holidays at their parents in law. Still it doesn't change the happiness of being together with parents and whoever we met.

Grannies that couldn't stop telling to (or not to) do this and that. Mouths that couldn't stop chewing. Little feet that couldn't stop running here and there. Kids yelling. Error stomachs. But those are all the things we miss to do annually, every Idul Fitri.

Happy Eid Mubarak.

The Full Fasting.

This is day five we do fasting. I know it is hard for the kids to wake up and have early meal at three. There those men fall asleep after finish their meals have sleeping.

And for Ar and Ir, this is the first year they do a full fasting, from shubuh to maghrib. About 14 hours. It is dry season now, and days are pretty hot. With the daily activities they keep doing, it's wonderful how they can pass it well.

I hope they'll keep the spirit to the end of the fight.

Ramadhan kareem. Have a great fasting month, everyone.

khitan boys (the circumcised)

For syar'i and/or medical reasons, khitan (circumcision) is a must for (moslem) men.  In our society, it is usually done when boys are around 11 years old.

Ar and Ir are 9 but they've asked to have it. We needed to make sure they were ready for this. I mean, it's kinda freaky to know that a part of your penis will be cut a little. But they convinced us they were ready. This has persuaded their cousins Muyas and Azam to have khitan too.

So we gave them what they wanted. Yesterday afternoon the khitan was done by my brother in law, Muyas's father. It was great, like we had a massal khitan. No party nor celebration, but it was merry enough to have grandparents and uncles and aunties and cousins come together to give supports to the brave boys.
Jadi kami ikuti kemauan mereka.

So glad that the boys didn't cry during the surgery. Brave boys. At night when the anesthesia slowly stopped working, they started feeling the hurt and pain, and cried. But it wasn't too long. I was ready for a long sleepless night, where I might need to fan the hurt penis all night and keep talking to calm down its owner. But it wasn't necessary. They slept tight and so did I.
Tidak ada yang menangis selama operasi. Hanya malamnya, ketika obat bius mulai berhenti bekerja, rasa sakit mulai terasa, mereka mulai menangis. Untungnya tidak lama. Aku sudah siap bakal melek semalaman, mengipasi penis yang kesakitan, sambil terus bicara menenangkan si empunya. Ternyata tidak perlu. Mereka tidur pulas, dan aku juga.

This morning I bathed- well, wiped- them- with wet clothes, and they said it doesn't hurt any more.

So one worry has over, one more step of being a parent is passed. Congratulations, big boys!
Jadi sebuah kekhawatiran berlalu, satu tahap jadi orang tua terlewati. Selamat, big boys!

Dek Ai's Aqiqah

last night we did aqiqah for Dek Ai'

from this web I excerpted the definition of aqiqah
Aqiqah literally means cut and it is often used for the hair of a new born baby that is cut or shaved.
Aqiqah is defined as the animal that is slaughtered on the occasion when the hair of a new born is shaved.

The animal is called aqiqah and it is also encouraged for the animal to be called nasikah or zhabihah.

The time to perform aqiqah begins with the birth of the baby. It continues until the baby reaches the age of puberty or independence. Once the person is independent, the responsibility of performing aqiqah rest on his ownself and he can perform it for his ownself if this act has not been done previously.
The best time to perform aqiqah is on the seventh day after the birth of the baby. This was reported in Abu Daud where the Prophet ( Peace be upon him ) said : " A young boy is cleansed with his aqiqah. An animal is slaughtered for him on the seventh day, his name is given and his head shaved."

we invited neighbors and friends. and alhamdulillah the ceremony went well.
hope Ai' will grow healthy, and be a shalih boy. amin

Warak Ngendhog, a tradition.

There are so many ways for Moslems all around the world to welcome Ramadhan, the fasting month. Here in Semarang, an imaginary animal called Warak, shows up to welcome Ramadhan.

Every Sya’ban, the month before Ramadhan, we have a festival, a fair, any thing you call it. We call it Dugderan. So many goods are sold there. But what makes it unique is there are special toys for boys girls sold only in this fair, and one of those is Warak.

Warak adalah binatang imajiner. Badannya berbentuk seperti kambing, namun kepalanya seperti naga. Warak yang berupa mainan, ukurannya relatif kecil. Memiliki empat roda.

Warak is an imaginary animal. Its body is like goat but its head is lika dragon’s. Warak as a toy is small. It has four wheels so you can put a rope on it, and pull it while walking, and it will follow you like a dog. Its curly sexy hair made of colorful oil paper. Nobody knows who invented Warak, or when it was invented. People who make and sell Warak nowadays get the ability making it from their parents without knowing history behind.

The culmination of Dugderan is the Warak Ngendhog Parade. ‘Ngendhog’ is Javanese means having eggs. The Waraks are having eggs.. Does it mean Warak is female? Or there male and female, but only the female ones join the parade? Not really. It’s not even clear whether warak is male, female or hermaphrodite…

Warak Ngendhog Parade is held right one day before Ramadhan. This year it is on August 21. Fortunately I was there on the street where the parade was held, before it is going to Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah

Waraks for the parade are off course different with the toy version. They are in bigger size, as big as a cow, some even more. They also dress up more colorful. The dragon head looks more real. Some are made like a Barongsai head.

Susah banget mau ngambil gambar yang bagus, penontonnya padee....ttt!!

It was a little bit difficult to take a good shot. Look at the crowd.....

Jadi... Selamat menjalankan ibadah Bulan Ramadhan!

So… Happy fasting month, for Moslems all around the world!

manasik haji Ar Ir

Last week Ar and Ir and hundreds of Islamic kindergartens students in South Semarang did a manasik haji. Manasik haji is a simulation to a Islamic Pilgrimage to Mecca, to do the fifth rukun as a moslem, and be home as a haji.

Buat muslim Indonesia, pergi haji butuh usaha besar, terutama sangunya.
For us, moslems who live in Indonesia, going to Mecca to do haji is a big effort, mostly about the funding. Off course, to some people money doesn't matter, but for most of us, it does.

Alhamdulillah both my parents, and my eldest sister and her husband have already done it, and it becomes my dream to be the next to go.

Menyaksikan anak-anak berpura-pura menjalankan ibadah haji membuatku trenyuh, dan bertanya-tanya kapankah, atau akankah aku pernah punya kesempatan sekali seumur hidup melakukan haji yang sesungguhnya.
Watching those kids pretending doing the pilgrimage has made my eyes watering and wondering when will I be able to, or will I ever have a chance of a life time to do the real one.

Semoga Allah mengabulkan permohonan kami, amin.
May Allah fulfill our wishes, amin.
